Tweed Tractors-Tractor Show

Recently while cleaning out my fathers’ office we found an old photo album filled with Polaroid photos. The album included photos from the early days of the family business, Tweed Tractors, operating in Murwillumbah NSW.

Tweed Tractors started in the early 1980’s as a tractor dealership selling and servicing Shibaura Tractors. It also sold in the Tweed area Allis Chalmers, Universal Farmliner, and John Deere tractors. During the 1980’s the company acquired Subaru and Mitsubishi car franchises. Later on taking on the franchise for Mitsubishi-Fuso Trucks. I started my apprenticeship in the truck workshop in 1999. The company name changed to Bedser Automotive in early 2000’s with the development of a 2nd dealership in Tweed Heads. This part of the business including the car dealership in Murwillumbah was sold in 2007. Today the company trades as Murwillumbah Truck Centre and is a dealer for Daimler trucks which includes Fuso, Freightliner and Mercedes-Benz truck brands.

What brought interest to me in the album was the photos of vintage tractors at a show, asking my Dad he thinks it was at a show in Beenleigh QLD where Tweed Tractors had a display, most likely the early to mid 1980’s.

On this post you can see these photos of the Tweed Tractors display and some of the various vintage tractors there. Would be interesting to know where these tractors are today and what condition they are in. Anyone with any information please leave a comment.

Styled or Un-Styled

The John Deere two cylinder tractor letter series are often referred to as either un-styled or styled. Around 1937 John Deere employed New York industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss to add streamline design features to their range of tractors and other equipment, to make them more appealing to farmers. The first tractors to be styled were the model A and model B, followed by the styling of the model D in 1939 and the model G in 1942. The main future of the first styled tractors had a streamline bonnet (hood), these tractors also had the option of electric starting. The battery was fitted behind the fuel tank under an extension of the bonnet. The starter motor fitted on top of the transmission. In 1947 the model A and B tractors were updated to included more powerful engines, electric starting and lighting as standard equipment. The battery was moved to be under the new “arm chair” style drivers seat and the flywheel was housed under a flywheel cover.

1935 John Deere Model B un-styled serial number 16416, radiator and steering exposed

1940 John Deere model B styled serial number 87324, styled bonnet and grill, hand start, radiator and steering covered.

1949 John Deere Model A, styled late model with flywheel cover, battery under seat.
